Fixing Broken Search in Outlook 2007

How to resolve the Outlook 2007 search indexing issue by rebuilding the search index.

The Problem

Outlook 2007's search functionality occasionally stops returning results entirely. The search bar is visible and functional, but queries return nothing, or an indexing error is displayed.

The Fix

Rebuilding the search index resolves this issue in most cases:

1. Navigate to **Tools** > **Instant Search** > **Search Options**

2. Click **Indexing Options**

3. Click **Advanced**

4. Under the Troubleshooting section, click **Rebuild**

5. Wait for the indexing process to complete (duration depends on mailbox size)

After the rebuild, search functionality should be fully restored.

Root Causes

The search index can become corrupted due to several factors:

  • Unexpected shutdowns or power loss
  • Large modifications to PST files
  • Outlook or Windows updates that interrupt indexing
  • Antivirus software interfering with the indexing process

  • If the issue persists after rebuilding the index, consider deleting and recreating the Outlook profile as a more thorough reset.
